Hands On: Sony's Xperia X Smartphones

BARCELONA — Sony announced a new line of devices here at MWC known as the Sony Xperia X series.

MWC Bug Art The three devices consist of the flagship Xperia X Performance, midrange Xperia Ten (above), and affordable Xperia XA. Nosotros went hands-on with all three, and they seem to exist your standard smartphone offerings from Sony simply with a greater focus on photographic camera and battery performance.

Sony Xperia X and X Performance
The Xperia X and 10 Performance are virtually identical in terms of blueprint and very similar in hardware. They have slender, light-weight builds with a metallic dorsum, and rounded frame. Their bezels are slim and the glass of the display curves slightly. Information technology's a departure from Sony'southward traditional, aggressively rectangular blueprint, and there'south no denying that both devices feel nicer to hold.

The Sony X and X Functioning have a wide power push button set in the eye right of the frame. Like the Xperia Z5, it doubles equally a fingerprint sensor in global markets, simply it will not take that functionality the U.Southward., unless there'due south demand, Sony says. Because the popularity of fingerprint sensors on phones like the iPhone 6s, Nexus 6P, and Samsung Milky way S6, I'd retrieve demand was pretty articulate, simply getting the phones to the U.Due south. in line with other global markets was also a consideration, apparently.

The volume button and a mushy physical shutter key are fix below the ability push. The shutter central is nice for snapping pictures, merely it's not very clicky, and so it's sometimes hard to tell if y'all've fully pressed it. Both phones take a 5-inch 1,920-by-1,080 curved Trilumnos display. It'southward sharp and bright, with a screen temperature that leans toward warmer colors.

In terms of hardware, the Xperia X has a Snapdragon 650 processor, 3GB of RAM, and 32GB of internal storage. The X Operation has the aforementioned hardware, merely runs a Snapdragon 820 processor. Both devices come with microSD card back up, and the Xperia Ten has dual-SIM capabilities, only Sony isn't certain if that model will come to the U.S. Sony Xperia X The X Functioning is also the only model that comes with the waterproofing that's become associated with Sony'south make.

Sony has focused heavily on camera capabilities; both devices have a 23-megapixel rear-facing camera that focuses faster and more accurately thanks to Sony's predictive hybrid autofocus technology, which tin go on moving objects in focus. The rear camera is capable of 1080p video and Sony boasts that the thirteen-megapixel front-facing cam is capable of taking selfies under low-light atmospheric condition.

Bombardment life management has been another large focus, and Sony claims that with Qnovo's adaptive charging applied science, the Xperia 10 series can get two days of bombardment life. The Xperia X Performance boasts a 2,700mAh battery and the Xperia Ten has a ii,620mAh bombardment. Both devices volition run Android vi.0 Marshmallow.

Sony Xperia XA
The Xperia XA is Sony's midrange and presumably more affordable offering, though it doesn't compromise on build quality. It sports a rounded metallic frame with a polycarbonate back. In that location's an edge-to-edge display that gives information technology a overnice seamless feel and swiping about on the 5-inch 1,280-by-720 screen is satisfying. The key layout is the same as the 10 and X Performance, with the standard circular power button, non the fingerprint scanner.

At that place are some bigger differences in terms of internals. The Xperia XA has a modest MediaTek MT6755 processor with 2GB of RAM. The battery is smaller at ii,300mAh, and the camera is also pared downward with a 13-megapixel rear-facing shooter and an eight-megapixel front-facing photographic camera. The camera has hybrid autofocus, but not the predictive characteristic that lets it keep runway of moving objects equally well. It comes with 16GB of RAM and tin take microSD cards. The XA will come with Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

Release Date and Availability
The phones will be available the summer of 2022 in a multifariousness of color options, including white, black, lime gilded, and rose gold. All three phones will come to the U.South., in line with other global markets, just pricing isn't currently known. That's a welcome change from the Xperia Z5, which arrived vi months late in the U.S., absent the fingerprint scanner. We still don't get a fingerprint scanner, but knowing that all three phones are coming, together with the Xperia Ear, is an improvement.

Nosotros'll be getting all iii phones into PCLabs, so stay tuned for a total review.
